Monthly Astrological Insights for May 2021

Date Posted: April 30, 2021

As May begins with a fast approaching close Uranus-Saturn square with in about two degrees and about a degree by the end of the month, the severity of the square would certainly be reflected in material world disasters including both the natural and man-made calamities such as a possible outbreak and spreading of a new virus (especially in India), natural disasters due to abnormal weather conditions all around the world. Unless these energies are properly understood, the man-made calamities might include increased friction between world powers (USA-Russia and China) perhaps resulting into war-like climate. More on this below.

Towards the end of May (May 26) a short lived total lunar eclipse occurs that would be visible in Australia for about 15 minutes. A partial eclipse will be visible  in part of Western US, Western South America and South-East Asia. For those who have the lunar nodes in conjunction with either Sun or Moon in their natal charts and have sidereal Taurus or Scorpio rising or Taurus or Scorpio as moon sign, might want to lay back. It’s probably not a good day. Take extra precaution and avoid any sort of new activity or new venture during the eclipse. More on this below.

On May 30, the planet Mercury becomes retrograde in sidereal Gemini. Retrograde Mercury in Gemini means more frustrating periods for educators, academics, traders, communicators, merchants, activists and researchers. This is not a good time to start a new project or venture, but rather reflect on what’s been done so far.  Also, this is the best time to cleanup that closet and do other chores that you have been postponing due to lack of time. More on this below.

In a worst case scenario, Covid-19, its variant and strains, and their spread and control will likely to stay with us in an up and down mode until mid- 2022.

A Total Lunar Eclipse (May 26)

A total lunar eclipse occurs on May 26, approximately during the hours of 9:00 to 13:00 GMT.  This eclipse will be visible in Australia for about 15 minutes. A partial eclipse will be visible  in part of Western US, Western South America and South-East Asia.

The Sun will be with Rahu (the north lunar node) and Moon will be with Ketu (the south lunar node)  within 5 degrees.  and therefore will last for a long time (4 hours). The eclipse will occur with the Southern or descending node Ketu, in the sidereal zodiac sign Scorpio and the ascending node Rahu in Taurus . Consequently this eclipse, according to Vedic astrology, is likely to be unfavorable for those who have sidereal Taurus or Scorpio rising or Taurus or Scorpio as moon sign.

For those who have the lunar nodes in conjunction with either Sun or Moon in their natal charts, should watch-out.  It’s probably not a good day. Take extra precaution and avoid any sort of new activity or new venture during the eclipse.

Retrograde Mercury (May 30 – June 23)

On May 30, the planet Mercury becomes retrograde in sidereal Gemini. It will stay retrograde in Gemini/Taurus until June 23. Typically retrograde Mercury means anxieties, communication breakdowns, unexpected delays, frustrations, missing deadlines, unforeseen obstacles and disappointment in daily chores.

In addition, if you have dominating Mercury in your birth chart and if Mercury is currently your operating planet, then you are more likely to experience the pronounced effects of retrograde Mercury during this period with respect to matters signified by the house it’s currently transiting through in your Gochar (transit) chart.

Jupiter’s transit in the sidereal Aquarius  (Phase 1: April 5 – Sept 15; Phase 2: Nov 20, 2021 – April 13, 2022 )

On April 5, Jupiter leaves (sidereal) Capricorn and temporarily enters the next zodiac sign, Aquarius.  Jupiter’s transit from one zodiac sign to the next occurs, on average, once a year. This time, the first phase of Jupiter’s transit in Aquarius will last until Sept 15, 2021. Then with its retrograde motion it will return to Capricorn and stay in Capricorn till November 20, 2021. And then on November 20, 2021, it reenters Aquarius and starts its second phase and that will last until April 13, 2022.

Aquarius being the air sign Jupiter’s manifestation in Aquarius will certainly  be reflected in emergence of new philosophies, philosophical debates, and as a result, perhaps new norms and new way of living.  For the entire world, in general, it’s going to be an auspicious time from the spirituality advancement point of view. In addition, Aquarius being a fixed sign, the resulting philosophical influences will likely to be long lasting.  Also, academia, social reformers, social justice, morality, universal brotherhood and to some extent religion are likely to be positively influenced by Jupiter’s transit in Aquarius.

While in Capricorn (September 15 – November 20), being a cardinal and earth sign ruled by Saturn, Jupiter in Capricorn has a tendency to enhance material prosperity of those who have well placed and well connected Saturn and Jupiter in their birth charts while others likely to experience their prosperity diminish. In general, transit of Jupiter in Capricorn is positive from material prosperity standpoint. It must be noted that despite Jupiter’s positive influence on world material prosperity, influence of other planets should be taken into consideration to assess the net effect for an individual based on his or her natal chart. In general, the Capricorn Jupiter is known to be responsible for world economic expansion.

On individual levels, for those who have dominant Jupiter in their birth charts and have Sagittarius, Pisces, Gemini, Leo, or Libra as their natal ninefold (Navamansa) ascendant are likely to experience a very positive period beginning April 5 thru September 15, and then Nov 20, 2021 thru April 13, 2022.

Saturn-Uranus Square (January 18 – July 19)

One of the most important and deadly planetary combinations of 2021 is the Capricorn Saturn and Aries Uranus square during January 18 thru July 19 and then during the entire month of December 2021.

Aries being a fire and cardinal sign is very suitable for brilliant, independent, ambitious, energetic, impulsive and crazy Uranus. The changes in world political landscape have been tremendously influenced by Uranus’s transit in Aries (Brexit’s revival, Briton intensely suffering from Covid-19 crisis, humiliating defeat of Donald Trump despite last ditch efforts to overturn the results and inauguration of president-elect Joe Biden as the next President of the United States of America, etc.,).

Now combine the Uranus’s energy with that of steadfast and subtle but very powerful energy of Capricorn Saturn through its challenging square with Uranus. It’s a perfect combination for material world disasters including the natural calamities such as a possible outbreak and spreading of new virus . Unless these energies are properly understood, the man-made calamities might include increased friction between world powers (USA-Russia and China) perhaps resulting into war-like climate.

The people who are likely to be most affected by this square are military personnel, people in power such as business leaders and political leaders.  In scientific and technological areas expect drastic changes; and emerging new ideas will find their ways into innovations and discoveries.  Since the characteristics of Uranus are closely tied with that of the United States as a country (especially the states of California, Oregon and Washington) likelihood  of serious natural and man-made calamities, political and financial upheavals is very strong.

Thus, the manifestation of this undesirable planetary square is likely to be reflected in both the natural and man-made calamities causing destruction and loss of lives during this period.

As far as the United States is concerned, since characteristics of Uranus are more aligned with liberal ideas and that of Saturn with conservatism, I wouldn’t be surprised if an intense battle emerges between the right wing republicans and the left wing democrats not only in congress but all over the country that might last through July.

About President Joe Biden and his challenges…….

Presently President Joe Biden is having Dasa cycles as: Jupiter major, Rahu intermediate and Saturn sub cycle until May 5, 2021. After May 5, the Mercury sub cycle begins lasting till September 8, 2021.  The planets in the Nakshatras (constellations) ruled by Jupiter are: Jupiter and Mercury; in the Nakshatras ruled by Rahu are: Mars and Ketu; and in the Nakshatras ruled by Mercury: none. Thus, after May 5th, the activation of energies of Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Ketu are expected to be reflected in President’s activities and actions.

With Libra as his ninefold (Navamansh) ascendant, the favorable Jupiter will be in the 5th house of his Gochar (transit) chart till September 15, 2021; Mercury in the 8th till for the entire month; Mars in the 9th for the entire month of May and Ketu in the 2nd house.

Given their Gochar chart dispositions, Jupiter will be more favorable for him starting April 5 in achieving quite a few goals that he has set out to do, and these likely to include humanitarian needs such as continued Covid-19 nationwide vaccinations efforts, international prestige, gun control, immigration control and possibly some success in having bipartisan congress.  Additionally Mercury will be successful for the entire month in dealing with day to day issues and getting things done.  His popularity is likely to further rise as Americans experience more stability.

However, while The 9th house Gochar Mars will not be unfavorable, it being neutral may prove to be less challenging for him in May in dealing with congress, both the republicans and democratic alike. The lunar node Ketu will also be more favorable in having less obstacles in governing the country.

Overall, May will likely prove to be a far better month so far for him.

Global Insights……..

The important challenging planetary configurations for May include: Saturn-Mars (May 14-16) quincunx; Pluto-Saturn (May 2 – July 3), Pluto-Neptune (May 26 – June 19), Neptune-Jupiter (May 4-10), Saturn-Jupiter (May 12-18) ninefold quincunxes; Uranus-Rahu/Ketu (May 14-20) ninefold squares; Neptune-Rahu (April 28 – May 6) ninefold conjunction.

The Saturn-Mars (May 14-16) quincunx may become responsible for a short term but very intensive friction between India and Pakistan is likely. Violence, especially in Middle-East area, will be on rise. Outbreak of an undesirable happening, and strong occurrences of both natural and man-made calamities are real possibilities.

The manifestation of the Pluto-Saturn (May 2 – July 3) and the Pluto-Neptune (May 26 – June 19) ninefold quincunxes may be reflected in an outbreak of violence and terrorist activities in Middle-East, a strong possibility of natural as well as man-made calamities, and to some extent, war-like climate in some part of the world. Tension between Israelis and Palestinians will remain unabated. Some of the east-European countries, Russia, and China may experience political as well as social turmoil.

The Neptune-Jupiter (May 4-10) ninefold quincunx may mean that world religions are likely to be challenged with earthshaking ideas that they must attend to. New controversial issues will take the central stage in the religious world. Religious leaders will be challenged as they are going to be put on the test . Those who are willing to be open minded and ready to listen and act on new and fresh ideas without losing morality, are the ones that going to be responsible to guide people. Others are likely to fade away with time.

The Saturn-Jupiter (May 12-18) ninefold quincunx may become responsible for religions around the world finding the difficulty in carrying out their activities. More controversies are likely to occur to test traditional moral values, and in general, religious authorities will have difficulty in having people keep their faith.

The manifestations of the Uranus-Rahu/Ketu (May 14-20) ninefold squares may be reflected in rise in violence in the United States besides the volatile region of the Middle-East (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Israel and Palestine). Also, the United States and particularly the President Biden and his administration should take extra precaution in dealing with foreign matters.

The manifestation of the Neptune-Rahu (April 28 – May 6) ninefold conjunction may be reflected in social as well as economic turmoil in Russia and China. Eastern European countries are also likely to be negatively influenced by this planetary configuration.  Covert activities around the world may find a new momentum (but because of Neptune’s secretive character we may never know) with regard to terrorism and other international conflicts.

The important auspicious planetary configurations for May include Saturn-Rahu (April 15 – May 5) trine and Pluto-Jupiter (May 12-17) ninefold sextile.

The manifestation of the Saturn-Rahu (April 15 – May 5) trine may be reflected in a positive period for Europe, Pacific rim-countries and Indonesia. It is also a good time for religious leaders to expand their activities helping people restore their religious faith. This period is also good for progress in technical fields (new innovations and discoveries) and religious reconciliation.

The Pluto-Jupiter (May 12-17) ninefold sextile may become responsible for likely significant changes in religious and academic and to some extent social fields. Initial reaction to these changes might appear to a bit confusing and perhaps chaotic, but the majority of us are going to embrace this new wave of changes and are very likely to enjoy them.

The countries that are more likely to be affected during this month are:  Russia, China, United States, India, Pakistan, Europe and Middle-East (Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Palestine-Israel regions).
