The lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu are fictitious planets. They represent the points of intersection between the Moon’s orbit around the Earth and the Earth’s orbit (ecliptic) around the Sun. The ascending node is called Rahu and the descending node is called Ketu. The ascending node is also known as the north node, and the descending node as the south node. Because eclipses occur only when the Sun and Moon are near these nodes, classical Vedic astrology—Jyotish—grants them full planetary status and treats them as powerful karmic indicators. Astronomically, they are always exactly 180° apart, forming a single karmic axis.
Because they form a single karmic axis, they certainly provide an opportunity to balance their opposite tendencies and core characteristics and to steer the life journey toward spirituality—ultimate freedom and the ability to directly perceive the truth behind or underneath the illusory world—Maya—regardless of whether a person is in the midst of the material or non-material world.
The Characteristics of Rahu
The following nouns and adjectives describe Rahu’s characteristics: obsessive desire, ambition, inclination toward different cultural backgrounds, innovation, illusion, obsession, magical spells, black magic, witchcraft, curses, a chain of bad luck, cruelty, tragedy, temptation, misfortune, downfall, “why me?”-type experiences, failure, and strange happenings that cannot be explained by logic.
Rahu amplifies whatever house or sign it occupies—often to extremes. Rahu pulls the native toward unfamiliar territory in this lifetime and creates restlessness until its karmic lesson is understood. When unfavorably positioned in a natal chart, not only does it intensify its negative energy, but it can also diminish the positive energy of a planet with which it is associated. On the other hand, it bestows success, fame, popularity, prestige, wealth, luck, and good times until its good karma runs out.
The Characteristics of Ketu
Ketu represents material detachment, past-life mastery, seclusion, sudden losses, the world renouncer, the seer, unselfishness, and moksha—the ultimate freedom. It dissolves interest in the house it occupies and shows what is already mastered from past incarnations. Strong Ketu often indicates spiritual depth and unusual analytical or intuitive gifts.
The House Disposition
The energy of Rahu or Ketu in any house must always be evaluated in the context of the entire birth chart. The placement of other planets relative to the nodes, their house ownerships, aspects, and mutual relationships can significantly modify the results. The house position provides an important foundation, but it is only one part of the overall chart interpretation.
1st and 7th House Axis
Rahu in the 1st House
Rahu intensifies the personality and creates a strong urge to define oneself. In appearance, the person is likely to be short. The person feels compelled to reinvent their identity, stand out, and assert independence. There is a karmic push toward self-development and confidence. Relationship challenges may exist until the person understands their own individuality.
Ketu in the 7th House
Ketu brings detachment in partnerships. Marriage may feel karmic or unusual. Ketu, being spiritual in nature, may draw the person toward a spiritual partner. The person learns to balance independence with partnership.
2nd and 8th House Axis
Rahu in the 2nd House
A strong desire for wealth, status, and material security may force the person to seek unethical ways to acquire wealth. Rahu amplifies financial ambition, selfishness, and possessiveness to the point that he or she may not get along with extended family members. Speech tends to become provocative and sometimes unconventional.
Ketu in the 8th House
A deep intuitive understanding of hidden matters can lead to transformation. The native may detach from fears and crises, having mastered these realms in a past life. The potential for an ability to differentiate between right and wrong is more likely, but because worldly security becomes less important, the native could become bankrupt.
3rd and 9th House Axis
Rahu in the 3rd House
This is a favorable house for Rahu to occupy. Bold communication, courage, and a desire to prove oneself can lead the person to professional success. Rahu pushes the native toward self-effort, skill development, and risk-taking. Siblings may play karmic roles. Learning comes through direct experience.
Ketu in the 9th House
Ketu feels at home in this house. Positive past-life experiences come in handy to navigate through life with dharma, philosophy, and higher learning. The native may feel detached from traditional religion or formal belief systems. Spirituality becomes intuitive rather than structured. Teachers may appear in unconventional ways.
4th and 10th House Axis
Rahu in the 4th House
An unusual home life, foreign residence, or unconventional emotional patterns are the hallmarks of Rahu in this house. Rahu creates restlessness in domestic matters and a desire for comfort or luxury. Emotional security may be sought through external achievements.
Ketu in the 10th House
Natural competence in career but a lack of desire for recognition may be due to Ketu’s presence in the 10th house. The native may avoid the spotlight despite strong abilities. Past-life mastery of responsibility makes worldly ambition feel repetitive. Growth may come through balancing home and career.
5th and 11th House Axis
Rahu in the 5th House
Creative brilliance, unconventional intelligence, and a strong desire for recognition are some of the qualities of Rahu in the 5th house. Relationship challenges and friction with children are karmic and can be overcome through understanding life with awareness and an open mind.
Ketu in the 11th House
Ketu in the 11th house has a tendency to create detachment from large social circles. Gains may come easily but may feel unsatisfying; however, from the standpoint of spiritual progress, this house becomes important.
6th and 12th House Axis
Rahu in the 6th House
This is a very favorable house from the standpoint of professional success and career advancement. While a few health issues may surface, this house is excellent for being victorious over competition.
Ketu in the 12th House
This is a spiritual house for Ketu. The person loves seclusion, being in nature, and staying far away from material life. Spiritual inclination is very natural. Monks, hermits, and wanderers are more likely to have Ketu in the 12th house.
7th and 1st House Axis
Rahu in the 7th House
While there is an intense desire to have a relationship, karmic challenges must be overcome to understand what it takes to have a healthy relationship. The relationship is likely to be unconventional and karmic, with a natural tendency to gravitate toward a person from a different cultural background. Rahu forces the native to learn through marriage and collaboration.
Ketu in the 1st House
The person may appear to be tall. Unless it is aspected by malefic planets, the person symbolizes a strong detachment from the material world. The native may feel spiritually oriented or introspective. While going through life experiences, the person has tremendous potential for self-knowledge.
8th and 2nd House Axis

9th and 3rd House Axis
Rahu in the 9th House
Rahu seriously questions traditional norms, age-old beliefs, and conventional patterns of life. Rahu pushes the native toward exploration of higher knowledge in new ways. Travel becomes karmic.
Ketu in the 3rd House
This is a tremendously favorable house for Ketu from the standpoint of spiritual growth. Natural courage and skill, together with a lack of interest in self-promotion, are the essence of Ketu’s characteristics as they manifest in the 3rd house. The native may withdraw from sibling dynamics or competitive environments.
10th and 4th House Axis
Rahu in the 10th House
This is an excellent house for Rahu to occupy from the standpoint of professional success and fulfilling the life purpose. Rahu’s achievements come through strong ambition, a desire for status, an unconventional career, and recognition. The native is pushed to build a public identity and contribute to society, only to realize in the end that the journey was merely self-fulfilling, ego-stroking, and selfish.
Ketu in the 4th House
The person is likely to go and live far away from their family as a result of their karmic path. Until the person reaches self-realization, they are likely to continue experiencing emotional challenges and a deprivation of inner peace.
11th and 5th House Axis
Rahu in the 11th House
Rahu is not conducive to romantic relationships. Large networks, unusual gains, and obsession with social achievement are some of the things Rahu offers. Rahu amplifies ego and the desire for recognition through groups or communities.
Ketu in the 5th House
While fully capable of achieving fame and success through natural creativity and talents, Ketu at the core level is not interested in material success. There is a natural inclination toward spirituality.
12th and 6th House Axis
Rahu in the 12th House
Childhood trauma, loss, and isolation are some of the karmic experiences the person might go through. Rahu pushes the native toward spiritual exploration, creativity, or retreat if it is supported by spiritual planets such as Saturn, Pluto, or Neptune with favorable aspects.
Ketu in the 6th House
The person has a natural inclination toward non-material life. The person tends to be a healer, reformer, and deeply interested in serving others and attending to their needs.
Rahu and Ketu in Vedic Astrology Sidereal Zodiac Signs
Although the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu’s zodiac sign placement is less significant than their house placement, favorable house placement combined with air or earth signs for Rahu and water signs for Ketu tends to provide additional potential for their further evolution. However, the final interpretation must take into account house placement, aspects, conjunctions, and the overall chart. Rahu and Ketu’s sign placement alone cannot determine personality or destiny.
